After settling in at the hotel, you will have the rest of the day free to begin exploring the city at your own pace.
The city of Loreto, surrounded by walls built in the 14th century as a defense, especially from Turkish invasions, developed around the basilica that houses the famous relic of the Holy House of Nazareth.
This treasure consists of the stones brought from the House where Our Lady the Virgin Mother of God was born, grew up and in which the Annunciation took place. The house consisted of a room made up of three stone walls that enclosed a cave carved out of the rock.
The grotto is venerated in Nazareth, in the Basilica of the Annunciation, while the three stone walls were transported to Loreto in 1294
Day 3
After a delicious breakfast you will have free time to visit the town knwon as the “capital of the Marian cult”. From the very first moment, visitors can clearly see that Loreto is a venerated town, in fact it is home to one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Italy, protected by ramparts and bastions, dating back to 1500 AD. The sanctuary has its origin in the 13th century (December 10, 1294) with the arrival of the house that was inhabited by the family of the Virgin Mary in Nazareth. The beautiful relic was transported to Italy after the fall of the kingdom of the Crusaders in the Holy Land.
You can start your day from the large ‘Piazza della Madonna’ and the impressive Loreto Basilica,. In the center of the square you will find a fountain dating back to the year 600. The square is located at the foot of the Basilica, built between the late Gothic and Renaissance periods. Inside, and under the impressive Dome, you will find the sacred relic, the “santa casa”, house of the Virgin Mary, where she received the presence of the Archangel Gabriel. Externally it is protected by a beautiful marble wall designed by Bramante, and with beautiful details. You may also visit the Museum-Pinacoteca, located in the Apostolic Palace, as well as the apses of Piazzale Loreto, enjoying the panoramic view to the Piazzale Gioivanni XXIII. Finally, you can enjoy a leisurely walk along Corso Boccalini, surveying all the goods at display, particularly items from the woodworking and traditional handicrafts, which are one of the strengths of Loreto, as well as articles worked in silver, ceramics and wood of excellent value.
